Supertuscan was the name invented by journalists in the English-speaking world to give a precise identity to the fine wines (primarily Sassicaia) produced in this area of Tuscany to pinpoint the absolute excellence of wine production (super) and the region where these wines are made (Tuscany), where the particular dry and sunny microclimate allows the cultivation of a series of vines of Bordeaux origin (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot).
The history of Sassicaia is magical and compelling. The idea of growing vineyards in a stony ground – sassi is Italian for stones – using not only grapes but also French methodology: drastic pruning for low yield in the vineyard and aging in barriques in the cellar. The results are extraordinary: international prestige, very high ratings from the critics gurus, bring the old vintages of Sassicaia to dizzying prices, but even a recent year like 2014 could easily reach 1000 euros.
The tour begins with a visit to Bolgheri, an ancient village born around a medieval castle which can be accessed after having walked a long tree-lined avenue, releases a persistent charm in memory.
The town, not far from the coast, is immersed in a countryside full of vines and olive trees, while the center shows a remarkable architectural harmony, with paved alleys and ancient stone buildings, often softened by geraniums blooms. The life of the village is animated by several artisan shops, wine bars, taverns and restaurants and by their proposal of typical products linked to the not indifferent food and wine tradition of this area. Here you will enjoy the typical Tuscan cuisine, toasting with a glass of Bolgheri Red or Sassicaia.
