In 1943, Nello Cioni decided to purchase 46 hectares of land, clear out the bramble, rebuild the house, and recover the fields, vineyards and olive groves. Today, this inheritance is managed by Elisabetta, his granddaughter, a young woman who grew up and continues to live in this rural culture. The farm produces extra-virgin olive oil, white wine, Chianti DOCG and Vinsanto del Chianti, while its agritourism allows you to live and breathe the most authentic agrarian culture, with no frills and in complete relaxation. Elisabetta welcomes guests and visitors by appointment for wine and olive oil tastings. Everything is accompanied by the most traditional flavours of Tuscan cooking. For a tasty snack in the farmyard, we truly recommend Pompone e Pola!

Pietralta is a family-run farm, founded just over thirty years ago by a couple of Italian-German pioneers. Dedicated to organic farming and experimentation from the beginning, Pietralta opens its doors to visitors for a tour of its wine cellars and a tasting of its six jewels. In the summer, a pause in the shade of its patio, up here with the breeze to cool you off, in front of the farmhouse built in the 1200s, is a priceless experience, especially for the spectacular view of the endless vineyards and woods found in these hills. The wine shop is always open, but it’s better to make a reservation if you want to enjoy a complete tasting.

Agricola Tamburini
Emanuela Tamburini is the latest of five generations of winemakers, but it’s thanks to her that, in 2005, the family farm took the great leap of putting a label on its wine. Today, the wine cellar produces four I.G.T. Toscana, two Chianti, one Brunello, Vin Santo and Grappa, and recently launched a new blend of Sangiovese and Touriga National, a vine variety typical of the Douro area in Portugal. Emanuela or her collaborators will be your guide as you discover the farm: after visiting the historical vineyards, the cellars for vinification and ageing, it will be time to sit down in the garden, or in front of the fireplace if it’s cold, and enjoy tasting her wines along with a light snack.

In 1990, John Stuart Dyson and his wife Kathe became the owners of Villa Pillo and its 400-hectare farm. An American politician and businessman, who was once the vice-mayor of New York, Dyson is also a passionate producer of wine and a patron: in addition to restoring the Palladian villa and surrounding park, he recuperated the vineyards and planted other varieties alongside the classic Sangiovese. Today, thanks to innovations including green pruning and harvesting entirely by hand, Villa Pillo’s wines enjoy numerous recognitions. You can taste them directly on the farm, but not before visiting its spectacular historical cellars.

This farm produces 7 labels, including Chianti DOCG, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and a Riserva di Chianti DOCG aged for 24 months in small casks. It has 25 hectares of land, including olive groves and vineyards that are well drained and exposed to the sun. These are Corbucci’s numbers, but this cellar’s strength lies in the passion of Francesco and those who work with him to take care of this farm. Some define Francesco’s tastings as wine man shows, for the energy he uses as he guides his guests through wine tastings, and for his great ability to involve them when talking about wine, vinification and ageing processes. The farm is open every day except Sunday for direct sale; we recommend making a reservation for the full tasting.

Along the first part of Via Francigena that goes from Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano, inside the Benestare Park, on the road that many people take to reach the Bollori, the Casanuova Farm covers 25 hectares of beautiful vineyards. The grapes – sangiovese, trebbiano toscano, merlot, malvasia – are entrusted to the expert care and attention of Caterina and Saverio, who for three generations have been producing organic wines with a strong and decisive character in their cellar.
“Day after day we cultivate our land with respect for the environment,” Caterina and Saverio say, “we believe in herbicide- and pesticide-free viticulture, done with a code of best practices by intervening as little as possible in the vineyard. We scrupulously select the grapes, to develop an organic wine to be left to rest and refine until the magical moment of bottling.”
Casanuova has a wine store, where it is not unusual to meet some pilgrims resting 🙂 drinking a glass of red between stops on the Via Francigena. Visits to the winery and tastings are possible by appointment.

The Gasparri family has been producing wine and oil for generations. Every year, at Santa Lucia Farm, among the hills of Gambassi Terme that open toward Certaldo, more than 120 hectares of Chianti and IGT vineyards are harvested and quality wines made using strictly natural methods are produced. “We balance technology and tradition,” say the Gasparri family, “which allow us to keep up with the times and offer the highest quality of our products and Made in Italy.”

This small farm has a very enviable history. A tale that connects three generations, each marked by deep connection to the land that welcomed them. The Mercatili family has been in the wine and oil business since 1951.
Today, it has 8 hectares of vineyards including Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Vermentino and Malvasia and 1,000 olive trees; all surrounded by a breathtaking view: in fact, thanks to its location, you can admire the beautiful towers of San Gimignano.
Appreciated for their authenticity, Tenuta Mercatili’s labels are currently 6 including wine, oil and more. Every day by reservation they do wine tastings in their winery accompanied by curated light-lunches.
